Chapter 26

Tripp

Tripp eyed the man on the roof from his spot in the bushes. This was ridiculous, but it was the plan the brothers had come up with, and if it messed with Gabe’s head it was worth it.

They had done their research since the meeting with Mario two days ago. They now had a file started for each one of his goons, with Fable’s help. They didn’t tell her why they wanted her to help identify each of Gabe’s men, just that they wanted to know who to look out for.

The goon they were watching now was a bit lower on the rung, but it made him perfect for the first victim. The goon had a two-story house, and he was currently up on the peak replacing shingles. He had a ladder placed at the back of the house, and that was their target.

Suddenly from the street out front, they heard Dagger yelling. He was wandering down the middle of the street pretending to be drunk. Tripp and Navaho, who were crouched down in the bushes, chuckled from the brother’s antics. He was stumbling and screaming that the marshmallow man from Ghost Busters was chasing him. He was a fantastic actor and was drawing quite a crowd.

The goon on the roof dropped his hammer and moved to the front of the house to watch Dagger’s hilarious performance. As soon as he moved to the front peek and was out of sight, both brothers moved. Tripp stayed at the bottom and held the ladder, as Navaho hurried up it.

When Navaho reached the roof, he grabbed the large bag of nails, and slung it over his shoulder. When he had climbed about twelve rungs back down the ladder, he stopped and pulled a small saw out of the inside of his vest. With deft hands, he cut one side of the top six rungs. He then made sure they stayed in place and looked secure, before he hurried back down. The brother was fast, and when he hit the ground both men booted it back to the cover of the bushes.

They heard a siren, and a second later tires screeched as a car stopped beside Dagger. The brothers snickered again, as they heard Darren’s voice, yelling at Dagger that he was under arrest for drunk and disorderly conduct. Of course, Dagger fought with him a bit and Darren had to chase him around the neighbourhood. Finally, Darren wrestled him into the car and took off.

Seconds later the goon came back over the peak, and stopped to look around. Not seeing the nails, he immediately started cursing. Then he moved to the ladder and climbed over the side, to make his way down.

As soon as his foot hit the first rung it gave way. The man howled in terror and tried to move his foot to the next rung. Tripp and Navaho watched, as the next rung broke too and the man lost his hold. With arms flailing and a scream to wake the dead, the man fell to the ground.
